BIOGRAPHIES
POTOMAC NINE SUMMER IMPRESSIONS
JULY 10 – SEPTEMBER 12, 2007
Louis Bowers earned a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art with a magna cum laude’ honors in 1994. After graduation, he had several successful exhibits at Goucher College, the Harbor Hotel in Baltimore, and Swinney’s Bluff Side Gallery in Louisville, Ky.
In 2002, Louis continued his art education at the Art League School in Alexandria, Va. where he met the instructor, Robert Vander Zee. Robert helped guide Louis to discover his own voice and personal style in painting. Louis’s work is quickly finding its way into many private collections and galleries in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Jill Finsen’s painting studies include the Art League School and the Vander Zee School, both in Alexandria, Virginia and the Mendocino Art Center.
Prior to painting, Jill studied photography at the Maine and Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, the Corcoran School of Art Open Program and Northern Virginia Community College.
Jill’s photographs and paintings have been shown in juried exhibits including Virginia’s Art League, Capitol Hill Art League, The Arts Club (Washington DC), Washington Center for Photography and the Pierce School. She has had solo shows at Spiral Flight and Cosi Capitol Hill. In September, she will participate in a joint juried exhibition with Amy Lin at BlackRock Center for the Arts.
Roberta Gottesman delights in thinking outside the box. She sees beauty in an interpretation of life in which emotion and passion lie just beneath the surface. She tries to express emotion through use of vibrant color, light, and shadow, and to imbue her paintings with a sense of playfulness, longing, or mystery through the use of thick and thin paint, layering, and spontaneity of line and brushwork. She loves to wallow in paint in a purely physical way, often using her fingers instead of brushes. Her very messy palette reflects her tumultuous, disorganized, and often joyful view of life.
Roberta studied at the Art Students League of New York, the Art League School of Alexandria, and the Cape Cod School of Impressionist Landscape Painting. She is a member of the Potomac River Nine, a group of artists who are affiliated with the Vander Zee Gallery. She has exhibited her work in Soho, NY, and in several galleries and art venues in the Washington DC area.
Judith Judy earned a degree in art from Towson University in Baltimore, Maryland. After spending several years in a business career, she continued her studies in oil painting at the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia, The Vander Zee School and various workshops and independent study. She trained with painter and lithographer Marcel Salinas. Mr. Salinas was personally chosen by Picasso to produce images of his work.
Judith has participated in a number of juried shows and has exhibited at The St. Louis Artist Guild, The Art League School, The Rehoboth Art League and The Vander Zee Gallery. Judith’s work is finding its way into private collections in the northeast and mid-atlantic area.
Nelson Milder’s careers have ranged from a NASA scientist, congressional staffer and Washington lobbyist, to a tranquil place where he is now devoting his retirement years to his art. To date his paintings include portraits, landscapes, figures and still lifes. In the series of paintings currently on display at Results, he has chosen the landscape to brilliantly explore the use of color, form and composition to create both recognizable and imagined visual impressions.
He has studied at The Cleveland Institute of Art, the Fine Arts Department of Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio, and the Alexandria Art League. Most recently he has been working with Robert Vander Zee at the Vander Zee School in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.
Mr. Milder has exhibited at the American Horticultural Society, the Vander Zee Gallery in Old Town Alexandria, the Alexandria Art League. Mary’s House in Washington, D.C. and at Glen Echo Park in Maryland.
Nancy Varipapa is an accomplished oil painter who also works with the Vander Zee School in Old Town Alexandria.
